ChillTechnologies Limited (https://www.chilltech.cool//) (“ChillTech”) launches new cooling unit for refrigerated transport, running 100% off waste heat from the exhaust of a truck, eliminating greenhouse gases (“GHGs”) from food refrigeration in transportation.

Adding to the existing ChillTech offering, delivering cooling free at the point of use, for both refrigeration and building cooling.

Catalyzing the provision of the Cold Chain for food and perishables storage and distribution, targeting catastrophic levels of food waste in the Global South, delivering major GHG reductions and social and economic benefits.

ChillTech’s chillers:

  • Capture waste heat directly from dirty engine exhaust (diesel/gas/hydrogen reciprocating engines/microturbines/trucks), simply by plugging the exhaust into the chiller
  • Provide cooling from that waste heat, free at the point of use, for food/medicines/buildings
  • Eliminate fuel usage and GHGs from refrigeration and building cooling
  • Make cooling affordable and thus deployable in the Global South
    • Main target: food waste running at up to 65% because there is no refrigerated transport/cold chain, because fuel is too expensive and conventional cooling systems expensive and wasteful
    • Africa and South Asia need 100s of thousands of refrigerated trucks and a network of cold storage hubs, which will slash food waste in transportation
    • Bring zero cost cooling to islands and remote communities, as well as other energy-poor markets
  • Slash fuel costs and GHGs globally, in microgrids, temporary power installations, cold chain, off-grid and in remote and island communities
  • Using a zero GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerant and lowering air pollution
  • With unique patented technology and new products in development

Global Food Waste – an addressable disaster

  • The global impact of food waste is equivalent to 4.4 gigatons of CO2e a year.
  • If “food waste” were a country, it would be the third largest polluter after China and the US.
  • It is responsible for 8% of total anthropogenic GHG emissions, equivalent to the emissions of the global road transportation industry.
  • The current estimated global value of wasted food products is >$1 trillion, to which can be added a further $500 billion cost of GHG emissions from food waste (Source: UN FAO).
  • In many countries in Africa and South Asia, overall food waste runs at over 50% and in some staple food categories, it is up to 65% (tomatoes in Nigeria, for example).
  • At the heart of this ongoing disaster lies lack of refrigeration, for storage and transportation.
  • Conventional refrigeration and cooling systems are very inefficient, energy-hungry and so generally unaffordable in the energy poor Global South.
  • ChillTech addresses this problem by delivering cooling for free, driven off the waste exhaust heat of the very engines and power sources which are ubiquitous in the markets suffering most from food waste and which cause such a large percentage of GHG emissions.
  • Our technology, deploying now in projects in West Africa, can catalyze the development of a cold chain in the Global South, which today simply does not exist, delivering substantial reductions in food waste, lower GHG emissions and considerable financial and social benefit.
  • Backed by grants from the International Finance Corporation and in partnership with Kobo360 (https://www.kobo360.com) and TAK Logistics (https://taklogisticsltd.com) in Nigeria, ChillTech is installing its static chillers to deliver zero-fuel cost cold storage in Abuja and is shortly to deliver its truck cooling unit for road trials.

Services

Refrigeration (storage)

With capacities of between 18 kW and 300 kW, and temperature ranges of 3C to 18C, we deliver cold storage solutions with zero fuel cost and zero CO2. Our chillers can be run off waste heat from any generator, including hydrogen, and also off direct fired heat, or biomass. We are actively working on solar solutions as well, such that our technology can be deployed in almost any situation.

Refrigeration (transport)

With cooling capacities from 4 kW to 7 kW, designed for refrigeration of trailers up to 40/50’, and temperature ranges from 3-18C, our thermal compressor TRUs run off the engine exhaust gases, providing 100% cost- and CO2-free refrigeration. Back-up power from gas and solar is also provided, making the unit entirely self-contained.

Air Conditioning

ChillTech offers highly efficient, reliable cooling and heating units designed to fit easily into any existing air conditioning system. Both our stand-alone and externally powered models deliver a significant reduction in cooling emissions and energy costs at far higher ambient temperatures than other solutions.
